Families and leisure activities
Here you will find an overview of offers in the immediate vicinity.
The Rendsburg-Eckernförde district attracts people who are enthusiastic about sport and nature.
There are numerous cycling and hiking routes. Be it routes to the Schlei, Sieseby, Eckernförde, Missunder Schleifähre, Schwansener See, the cliffs or the Große Breite near Weseby. There is something for everybody.
The Hütten mountains invite you to go hiking or mountain biking. The Hüttener Berge are part of the Schleswig-Holstein hill country and lie between Fleckeby, Ascheffel, Old and New Duvenstedt and Brekendorf.
The adjacent landscapes include the large Schleswigsche Geest, Schwansen and the Danish Wohld.
The approximately 245 km long Oxenweg (‘Hærvejen’) was the central land route between Denmark and northern Germany in the 19th century. It served farmers as a route for cattle, but was also used by knights, soldiers, merchants, pilgrims and beggars as a direct route to the south. Today, cyclists get an insight into the natural and cultural history of northern Germany and Denmark on the tour along the historic land route.
Away from busy traffic routes, the route leads through wide moor areas and marshes, through forests and typical North German meadows and heath landscapes, past lakes and along rivers. On the way you drive through attractive cities such as Neumünster and Rendsburg and get to know numerous villages and communities along the way.
Schleswig and the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district offer numerous activities. Schleswig and Eckernförde are particularly worth mentioning for water sports enthusiasts.
Whether experienced or beginner. You can go diving, kiting, surfing, windsurfing, sailing or motorboating here. There are also several courses that can be booked at the respective schools.
The water ski and wakeboard park in Jagel offers a lot of leisure and sporting fun for little money. The connoisseurs among you will also find what they are looking for here. There is enough space on the lawn to enjoy a cool drink or two, savory dishes or an ice cream from the bistro while soaking up the sun.

There is a beautiful swimming area at Lake Owschlag near our hotel. This lake is located southeast of Owschlag in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district. Its water surface is around 23 hectares and the water depth is up to 1.80 meters. This idyllic meadow area with a playground, a public toilet, a permanent fireplace and a brick barbecue invites you to linger.
Selker Noor bathing area
The Selker Noor is now an inland lake, near the city of Schleswig. In the north, the Selker Noor is connected to the Haddebyer Noor and thus indirectly to the Schlei via a 10 meter wide narrow passage. At the narrow point between the Haddebyer Noor and the Selker Noor there is a pedestrian bridge from where you can get a beautiful view. There is a beautiful meadow right by the lake that offers a dry barbecue area. The public toilets are located behind the parking lot (as of 2022). In the middle of the lake there is a floating platform that children especially enjoy. The slide, which is located on a nearby bank, is privately owned and cannot be used for insurance reasons.
The Selker Noor is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, kayaking or stand-up paddling, especially in summer.
There are also other bathing areas at Wittensee and Bistensee, both of which also have sunbathing areas and barbecue areas.
850 animals in 150 species await your visit, in the midst of extensive, well-kept flowerbeds you will find exotic animal life from all over the world in the middle of Schleswig-Holstein. Tropical halls and walk-in animal houses make the visit an experience even in bad weather. In addition to the exciting animals, you will also find the Crazy House in the zoo. This house is the first house in the world to be built the right way up and then turned using two cranes. The entire furnishings, such as the mixer in the kitchen, the toilet in the bathroom, the plates including the dining table and much more are located overhead over two floors! The headstand and the additional longitudinal and transverse inclination of the crazy house of approx. 7 degrees will throw you off balance!
Anglers will also find good places for fishing here. The lake is a hit with carp fans.
Other lakes suitable for fishing include:
The Langsee, Brautsee, Gammellunder See, Idstedter See, the fishing lake in Alt Duvenstedt and the Brekendorfer fishing lake.
If you prefer fishing in open water, Rendsburg, Eckernförde and Schleswig are of course the best places to go.
You can obtain fishing permits from the responsible operator.
Haithabu Viking Museum
The Haithabu Viking Museum is one of the most important archaeological museums in Germany. UNESCO named the Viking Age trading center and the Dannewerk border structure a world heritage site in 2018. The exhibition house as well as the seven reconstructed houses located on the historic site impressively show how people lived there in the early Middle Ages.
Address: Haddebyer Chaussee B76, 24866 Busdorf
Gottorf Castle
Gottorf Castle has numerous exhibitions, guided tours, various courses and occasional events such as concerts and markets.
Schleswig is home to one of the most important secular buildings in Schleswig-Holstein. It has been rebuilt and expanded several times in its more than eight hundred year history, transforming it from a medieval castle to a Renaissance fortress to a Baroque palace. It gave its name to the ducal house of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf, from which, among others, four Swedish kings and several Russian tsars emerged in the 18th century.
